H.B. Wallace Preserve at Lone Mountain

This 78-acre preserve is located on the eastern slope of what is known as Lone Mountain in Scottsdale and consists of a rugged outcropping of rocks, shale, desert trees and cactus and is home to wildlife. The mountain itself is a metamorphosed remnant of sediment laid down over 2 billion years ago, when a shallow ocean covered this part of the world. About 1.7 billion years ago, magma rose from underneath and this remnant broke off from the surrounding rock and absorbed into the pluton. Erosion of the surrounding granite has left this mountain exposed.

The property is forever protected through a conservation easement, which was a gift from H. B. and Jocelyn Wallace. The mountain is privately owned and it is not open to the public. Guided hikes by the Land Trust are offered several times a year.
