Talking to Family About Money

  • Money and finances can be a difficult topic to address with family, as it can be emotional and complex.

  • It is important to have clear communication with children, parents and spouses about your thoughts, values and ideas to ensure your wishes and needs are heard and understood by those closest to you.

  • This can include:

    •  Talking to older parents about managing their assets to ensure they don’t outspend their wealth or what your role may be in their estate plan when they pass on

    • Sharing your personal values with your family as you contemplate how you will pass along your wealth.   Ensure they know your goals for supporting your community so they understand how you want to be remembered and can continue to your legacy.

    • Educating your children about the basics of finance to give them the tools they need to be successful

    • Being open and honest with your partner about your values around managing money
