Desert Foothills Land Trust
A Desert Legacy
Since
1999, the focus of DFLT’s fundraising efforts has been the
acquisition of State Trust lands, namely the Jewel of the Creek
Preserve and Go John Canyon. Thanks to contributions from the many
gracious individuals and private foundations, DFLT has raised over
$3.8 million. DFLT has been able to purchase 297 acres of pristine
desert, and the Arizona State Parks Department has awarded nearly
$3.8 million in matching grant funds.
With the suspension of the Arizona Preserve Initiative by the State
Land Department, DFLT has been focusing its efforts on developing
conservation partnerships with private land owners and working with
other conservation groups to change the way State Trust Lands are
managed.

DFLT in concert with staff from The Nature Conservancy in Arizona (TNC)
began a scientific "visioning" process, based upon TNC's many years
of conservation planning experience. This process has led to the
development of a conceptual
Conservation Plan for the Desert
Foothills region. DFLT and TNC staff have assembled
written and digital information compiled by public and private
agencies and developed a Geographic Information System (GIS)
database which allowed us to map out valuable habitat areas within
our region.
As we have in the past, we will depend upon the Desert Foothills
communities to help us realize our land conservation goals. As we
all know, real estate values have soared in the past few years. But
so too has the need to protect those areas with the highest habitat
value. To conserve this ever-shrinking landscape in its natural
state, DFLT needs your support and financial assistance now more
than ever.
